US President Donald Trump plans to address Republican loyalists on all four days of the party’s convention, which begins on Monday as the party seeks to regain the political initiative ahead of November's election. The Republican gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, follows the Democrats’ successful convention which saw Joe Biden boost his approval rating by five points. Mr Trump, a former reality television star, is expected to appear each night in the primetime 10 pm slot and two producers of the Apprentice, his former show, are reportedly involved in the planning. The theme of the convention will be “Honouring the Great American Story”, highlighting the successes of the presidency. Before the coronavirus outbreak, Republican strategists were optimistic about their chances of winning in November on the back of what had been a strong economy.
